Colon Cancer

Minimally invasive surgical treatment for colon cancer

Elderly patient lying in a hospital bed holding his abdomen in pain

Colon cancer develops in the large intestine, most often from a pre-existing polyp. Screening colonoscopy allows many colon cancers to be caught at an early, highly curable stage, and laparoscopic surgery now allows most patients to recover faster with smaller incisions than traditional open surgery.

Recognising the Symptoms

  • Persistent change in bowel habit — diarrhoea, constipation, or narrowing of stool
  • Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding
  • Abdominal cramping, bloating, or pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue related to unexplained anaemia

Diagnosis & Staging

Colonoscopy with biopsy is the definitive diagnostic test, and CT imaging of the chest, abdomen and pelvis is used to stage the disease and rule out spread to the liver or lungs, which are the most common sites of metastasis.

Surgical Treatment

The standard treatment is laparoscopic or robotic-assisted colectomy, removing the cancer-bearing segment along with its regional lymph nodes. For locally advanced disease, chemotherapy after surgery reduces the risk of recurrence.
